Jarlath Duffy - Change from Within

Just Do It!

What's required

It is worth noting that the process of not making a decision involves a decision. However, in the majority of occasions this non-decision will not be the correct one. Further, it can be construed as a misuse of power if one doesn't exercise the decision-making function to foster an outcome. What often stops the manager making a decision is lack of confidence. This can be in their role, their abilities, their skills or their knowledge. This often results in managers becoming attached to their non-decision with a belief that it is the correct choice - all of which can further diminish their respect in the eyes of subordinates.

Miss Schneider was my son's teacher in first grade. She had a mantra that she embedded in her pupils' minds - "Just do it". Indirectly she was telling them that a lot of learning is experiential and this helps to build confidence. Managers need to adopt this mantra into their style of operating. To do this they must be adept at gathering relevant information which can come from a myriad of quarters, including their subordinates. .Decisions ultimately drive change and shape destiny .Both inclusion and participation are nodal points for change and they help to generate respect and trust in a decision.
